When everything in life feels confusing, ask yourself this
What is one thing I don’t feel confused about right now?
Modern life is confusing.
We have so much apparent freedom that we’re constantly presented with opportunities to second-guess our decisions. Did I choose the right career? Would I be happier at another company? Will I find a better partner if I just swipe left again? In the midst of so many choices, even deciding what to make for dinner is an exercise in overwhelm!
This can lead even the most grounded and confident among us to feel confused from time to time. And if you’re in the midst of a big transition or other change of some kind, confusion is probably a constant companion (it sure is for me).
Here’s a small but helpful practice to try when everything in your life feels like one big, confusing mess. Ask yourself this question:
What is one thing in my life that I don’t feel confused about right now?
If nothing comes to mind right away, stay with it. Eventually, an answer will come. When it does, reflect on why you aren’t confused about this one thing.
- What does it reveal about your values, desires, fears, aspirations and capabilities?
- What steps can you take to bring forth more of this not-confusing thing into your life?
When the path ahead is unclear, simply pausing to reflect on what you do know is a tremendously powerful exercise. It may not clear all the fog, but it just might clear enough of it to reveal the next step forward.
